Focus Mode for Wireless Personal Monitors
By Kent Margraves, Sennheiser
"Can I get more of me in my ears?"
If you work around wireless personal monitor systems, particularly in the worship environment, you've probably
heard this request. The monitor mix, whether heard through a loudspeaker wedge or earphones is either mixed at the
FOH console, a dedicated stage-side monitor console, or nowadays maybe a compact, onstage, personal mixer
controlled by the artist.
Regardless of where the monitor mix is created, what if the artist feels like the balance of their voice or
instrument "vs. everything else" is never quite right? Or maybe it is, but only briefly, and is constantly being
"chased." How about giving the artist a bit of control over that balance in their wireless personal monitor mix?
One approach is to feed the dual-channel wireless personal monitor transmitter two independent mix signals: the
monitor mix minus "me," and the "me" signal. "Me" may be the artist's voice, instrument, etc. Sennheiser bodypack
wireless personal monitor receivers have a "FOCUS mode" feature. When this mode is enabled and the transmitter is
fed as just described, the artist can use a convenient "rocker button" on the side of the bodypack to personally
balance these two signals to taste. It's like a simple two-channel mixer at his or her fingertips. The rocker
button is very easy to find, and can be adjusted by feel, without looking.
But FOCUS mode isn't only for "more me" applications. It can be used any time the artist needs to be able to
control the wireless personal monitor balance of two signals or mixes on the fly. This might be their monitor mix
and a click track, their monitor mix and a producer's voice, or any other signal selection desired. Artists might
even enjoy using FOCUS mode to blend in their own ratio of ambience pickup. Imagine that!
