| Focus Mode for
In-Ear Monitors |
| By Kent Margraves,
Sennheiser |
"Can I get more of me in my ears?"
If you work around in-ear monitor systems, particularly in the worship environment, you've probably heard this
request. The monitor mix, whether heard through a loudspeaker wedge or earphones is either mixed at the FOH
console, a dedicated stage-side monitor console, or nowadays maybe a compact, on-stage, personal mixer
controlled by the artist.
Regardless of where the monitor mix is created, what if the artist feels like the balance of their voice or
instrument "vs. everything else" is never quite right? Or maybe it is, but only briefly, and is constantly
being "chased". How about giving the artist a bit of control over that balance in their in-ear mix?
One approach is to feed the dual channel IEM transmitter two independent mix signals – 1) the monitor mix
minus "me", and 2) the "me" signal. "Me" may be the artist's voice, instrument, etc. Sennheiser bodypack
IEM receivers have a "FOCUS mode" feature. When this mode is enabled and the transmitter is fed as just
described, the artist can use a convenient "rocker button" on the side of the bodypack to personally balance
these two signals to taste. It's like a simple 2-channel mixer at his or her fingertips. The rocker button
is very easy to find, and can be adjusted by feel, without looking.
But FOCUS mode isn't only for "more me" applications. It can be used any time the artist needs to be able
to control the IEM balance of two signals or mixes on the fly – this might be their monitor mix and a click
track, their monitor mix and a producer's voice, or any other signal selection desired. Artists might even
enjoy using FOCUS mode to blend in their own ratio of ambience pickup. Imagine that!

| What worship ministries are saying about Sennheiser... |
| "I also would like to thank you and Sennheiser for not only your
assistance with the whole TVBD fiasco, but your support of the H.O.W. market in general. It is truly
remarkable these days to have a manufacturer of the size of Sennheiser that allows its personnel to
interact with the end-user not only through outlets such as CSC, but the rapid personal response to
crazy tech guys like me! It is why I can recommend using your products so readily." |
